Neighborhood Watch

Our Mission

To strengthen neighborhood ties; increase personal safety and security awareness; be the eyes and ears of the Oakwood Hills Police, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the Cary Fire Departments; and encourage emergency preparedness.

About the Neighborhood Watch

The Oakwood Hills Neighborhood Watch was formed in Spring 2025 with the encouragement of Oakwood Hills Police Chief Danny Rains and resident Lori Bowden. The goal from the beginning was simple: to bring neighbors together to help keep Oakwood Hills a safe, welcoming place to live.

Neighborhood Watch is a resident-led effort focused on awareness, communication, and prevention, not enforcement or confrontation. Members are encouraged to stay informed about what’s happening in the neighborhood and to report suspicious activity to police or local authorities rather than getting involved themselves.

Through regular monthly meetings, shared meeting notes, and the Oakwood Hills Neighborhood Watch Facebook page, neighbors share safety concerns, recent incidents, and practical prevention tips. Neighborhood Watch signs and decals throughout Oakwood Hills signal that the community is alert and connected, helping deter crime and enabling neighbors to recognize when something seems out of the ordinary.

The group works closely with the Oakwood Hills Police Department, who provide guidance, training, crime trend updates, youth programs and safety advice. Monthly meetings focus on practical safety topics such as locking doors, improving outdoor lighting, watching out for neighbors who may be away, crime prevention training, and opportunities for emergency preparedness and certification programs, amongst other topics.

How the Group Works

The Neighborhood Watch is effective because of strong communication, clear expectations, and active resident participation. Members understand their role is to observe and report, not to confront. Trust, inclusiveness, and kindness are priorities, so all neighbors feel welcome and respected. The group is supported by Martin Badrov Chair, Co-Chair Melissa Flores, and Kim Kurschardt Secretary, who help keep meetings and activities organized.

Get Involved

Oakwood Hills residents are encouraged to participate in whatever way feels comfortable. Opportunities range from serving as a Block Captain to helping share information with neighbors through communications or meeting notes, attending meetings, or taking on leadership roles such as Chair, or Co-Chair. The roles of Chair, Co-Chair, and Secretary are open for annual review and transition each May. Whether your involvement is big or small, every contribution helps keep Oakwood Hills connected, informed, and safe.
